Grey
and overcast once again on the trip down to Piddinghoe for Races 9 & 10.
There was just the merest of hint of breeze upon leaving Hove and little more
on arrival at the pond. The horizon to the south on approaching the village
showed a line of bright orangy sky but it did not break during the racing.
Bill
Giles, the day’s RO, set a course with a committee boat start and a mark midway
along the south side. The first leg was a beat to a mark off the Fisherman’s Bay
– in the northeast corner – leaving it to starboard and then with a reach to
the mark midway along the eastern shore. From there it was behind the island to
the mark at the south eastern corner and then back to the start mark from there
it was back around the north side of the island, into the corner and then back
up to the mark off the clubhouse before another windward leg back to Fisherman’s
Bay.A light breeze, just about force 2, had developed by the time for the start and some twenty boats went afloat. The line was a bit biased and it paid to start at the pin end.
First
across by the pin was Alex Millls-Barton (Laser full rig) with Alan Simmons
(Streaker) close behind. Further down the line Chris Turner (Byte CII) was also
quick of the line but somewhat down wind and with Rupert Smith (Laser Radial)
about level with Alan. Laurence Venus (Streaker) was a good two lengths behind
Alan over the line but had a serious lift along the west side and then tack for
and round it well ahead with only Alex ahead. The rest of the fleet having
started in the committee boat half of the line got rather strung out but coming
up the south side for the first time it was Chris behind Alan, then Julian
Dobson (Laser full rig), Rupert, Graham Hardy (Laser full rig) and Yves Horent
(Laser full rig). The next group around the south eastern mark were Bill Wates,
Steve Duncan, Terry Jones and John Smith (all full rig Lasers) with Zoe McCaig
(Laser Radial) at the back.
After
the return trip around the Island the order at the end of lap one was Alex 1st,
Laurence 2nd, Alan 3rd, Chris 4th, Julian 5th,
Rupert 6th, Yves 7th, Graham 8th, Michael
Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200) 9th, Steve 10th, Bill 11th,
Terry 12th, John 13th,
Zoe
14th, Tim Cox (Laser Radial) 15th, Dave Murley (Pico) 16th,
Josh Smith (Topper) 17th, Aiden Murley (Topper) 18th,
Colin Cryer (Otter0 19th and Charlie Riggs (Topper) 20th.
Lap
two saw no place changes for the leading three boats but Julian overtook Chris
to go 4th and Rupert dropped back two places. The two Mikes and
Steve got past Graham whilst Tim climbed up past John and Zoe. The tail end order
was Dave 16th, Aiden, Charlie and Colin. Josh was finished at the
end of the first lap and only Dave of this group went on for the final lap. For
lap 3 the leading five held the same positions but the two Mikes climbed up
another two places to 6th at the finish. Yves dropped back
horrendously to 11th (four places), Steve gained one place as did
Graham and Bill but the next group stayed as in the previous lap. With the
handicaps applied Laurence was the winner, Alan was second, Alex third and
Chris fourth.
Race
10 (the second of the day) was held over the same course with a more evenly
balanced start line. It was a bit crowded down by the committee boat and Rupert
pushed it a bit too far ending up with his bow over at the gun. At the far end
Yves was away first with Chris up above Steve who in turn was above Terry.
Alex
started in mid line and found a nice big gap opening up for him in which to ‘power’
away. The breeze for this race had dropped off quite a bit from the first race
of the day and it was almost drifting conditions. Alan started at the committee
boat end some length and a half ahead of Laurence but was blanketed by the rest
to windward. By the end of the windward leg Alex was out in front with Steve
behind then Chris, Julian and John. The next group to the mark (at the
Fisherman’s Bay) included Laurence – who managed to clip the mark by catching its
warp, pulling it onto his boat – the two Mikes, Yves, Alan and Graham. There
was yet another gaggle just behind including Bill, Rupert and Tim.
By
the time Laurence found some clear water and did his turns Yves had passed him
and Alan was alongside but the order changed after the mid - east - side mark
whence it was a dead run to the south east corner. On the next trip back past
the north side of the Island Alan managed to stop briefly on the east edge but
was able to gybe out of the mud and restart sailing. By the end of the first
lap the order was Alex 1st, Chris 2nd, Steve 3rd, Julian 4th,
Laurence 5th, Yves 6th, Alan 7th, the two Mikes
8th, John 9th, Graham 10th, Terry 11th,
Rupert 12th, Tim 13th, Bill 14th, Simon Hudson
& Bill (RS200), Zoe 16th, Dave 17th, Colin 18th,
Josh 19th, Charlie 20th.
Lap
two, in continuing dropping breeze, Alex led the way home from Chris and Steve
and saw Laurence gain another place up to 4th pushing Julian down to
5th. Meanwhile Rupert went up to 11th, Tim to 12th
and Bill to 13th all overtaking Terry. After the handicap had been applied Alex was top dog with Chris following, Laurence took third Steve was fourth and Alan fifth.
It was a pity that the breeze died off for the second race, certainly not helpful to the slow boats, and that the sun did not appear until later in the day but generally it was a nice little sail.
In
the overall results Alan is at the top of the leader board with Rupert second
and Chris tied on points with him with Steve lying fourth – for full results
