On leaving Hove this morning it was Grey, Raining and Misty and Breezeless. As we approached the top of King
George V1 Avenue the cloud base was down to zero feet. It felt as though it might
be difficult to see the far side of the pond. As it turned out the cloud began
to lift and by the time we were on the A27 approaching Kingston all was clear.
The next problem was with big puddles, half way across the road on the approach
to the village, mid-way through the village and on way down to Piddinghoe. On
arrival at the pond there was hardly any puff but a trickle did come in from
the South in time for the start.
Dave Hitchens (Laser 122467) was RO, assisted by Julian Dobson (Laser 7)
with P Knipe and R Lowison in the safety boat. A course was set as a trapezoid
around the shores of the Pond, as shown below, with the start from the small
pier to the north of the clubhouse and a finish from the clubhouse jetty.
At the gun, Dave Murley(Laser Radial) was first to cross the line, at the pin end, for the short beat to the first mark. Alan Simmons (Streaker) was next away and then Ed Thorburn(Finn) between the two. Ed soon tacked towards the clubhouse shortly tacking back and rounding the mark ahead of Alan with Dave third to get onto the reach. From the small fleet the next pair were Bill Wates (Laser Radial) and lastly Darrel Top (Laser full rig).
Down the reach Ed began
to pull ahead of Alan and Bill began to close in on Dave but with Darrel
struggling in the light wind. By the end of the first lap Ed was first to cross
the line with Alan 2nd 45 seconds astern, Bill 3rd a minute and eight
seconds further back. Dave was 4th and Darrel 5th.
Lap 2 had Ed well out in front, a minute and 20 seconds ahead of Alan.
Bill was in third place 22 seconds ahead of Dave with Darrel nearly a lap
behind.
Lap 3 and there were no place changes within the fleet. Ed pulled further
ahead of Alan to cross the line five minutes in front. Bill and Dave continued
to have a battle with Bill leading him across the line by just one second at
their finish. Darrel however gave up and did not finish the lap.
Lap 4 the final lap for Ed and Alan, Ed crossed the line 6 minutes ahead.
With the results, having had handicaps applied, the race win went to Ed
Thorburn with Alan Simmons second, Bill Wates third and Dave Murley fourth.

There was a triffle of breeze but with big holes making luck, in not
falling into them, play a large part. Once again the XCWeather forecast was not
correct. I believe that the Pond has its own weather system and I repeat turn
up and see what is really happening on the day.
