Streaker Ramblings –Emberton Park -12th April 2014

With 120 miles to drive we set off at 7.30am the morning, for Emberton Park, after our return from a week’s holiday – The Lake District, the Carlisle & Settle Railway and Liverpool (Beatles Tour). On arrival it was sunny with a light breeze, about force 2 and once afloat it was found to be very shifty too.

 

The first race started from the east point of the island heading to the No1 mark in the west corner. At the gun it seemed that those boats nearest the inshore end of the line were best favoured and it was Ian Bradley (Ouse ASC) who seemed to get the best start close to the Island shore. However  it was those who tacked off early, further from the Island, namely Debbie Degge (Bartley SC), Mike Hobin (West Oxfordshire) and Veronica Falat (Waveney & Oulton Broad) who made it first to the windward mark. It was rather busy here with little if any breeze and there was a good bit of shouting ‘Starboard’ and a few had to do turns. Mike was first away on the following broad reach in the fickle breeze, hotly pursued by Debbie and Barney Proud (South Windermere) and Ian.B on the inside lane. Veronica was next to the gybe mark and Alan Simmons (Lancing SC) not far behind. The leading five pulled away from the remainder of the fleet with Ian.B gaining ground. The rest of the race, held over the course within the main area to the north of the Island finished with Debbie ahead of Ian.B and Veronica ahead of Mike whilst Barney had to be content with 5^th ahead of Mark Langston (Beccles ASC). Rowan Curtis (Beccles ASC) took 7^th ahead of Matt Whitfield (Tamworth SC) with Alan back to 9^th followed by Ian Whifield (Tamworth SC) then Gary Hogan (Emberton Park SC). The final pair were Peter Withington and finally Nick Carter (both Burgfield SC).

 

After a short break between the back to back races, race 2 commenced on a slightly different course. This time the two marks between the clubhouse and the Island were brought into the sequence. The start was the same with the short beat to No1 mark at the west end of the island and once more the fleet split between going for the shore or tacking out early with Debbie first away in mid line and Veronica a touch nearer the pin end. Again there was a bit of bunching at the windward mark and later in the first lap at the No8 mark close by the clubhouse and the subsequent No9 just to the west in barely any breeze. The early leaders, Debbie and Mike taking the route round the west end of the Island with the rest of the fleet taking the same route. Barney soon took the lead, having opted to go east around the Island, with Debbie behind him, then Mike followed by Veronica .with Ian.B in 5^th place and Gary up to 6^th.

Lap two saw Veronica claim the lead from Debbie with Mike next and Ian up to fourth but with Barney dropping back to 5^th on the long leg from the north end. Lap 3 had yet a new leader as Ian.B went in front with Debbie second with Veronica in third and Mike fourth. In the final lap Debbie moved into the lead having gained water at the penultimate mark thus beating Ian.B and then Veronica. Fourth place went to Mike with Barney in 5^th and Matt 6^th.  Alan could make no better than 12^th throughout this race with only Nick astern of him.

 

Race 3, held after lunch, was run over the same course – with the two marks on the club side of the Island both in play. Debbie was soon in the lead spot with Barney lying second at the end of the first lap and Ian.B in 3^rd spot ahead of Mark and Veronica 5^th.

 

In lap 2 on the first reach Debbie took a heavy gust and went for a swim allowing Ian.B to take the lead and begin to extend the gap ahead of Barney whilst Veronica lost a place to Mike and Mark also dropped back a place to lie 5^th. Debbie had a long struggle to get her boat up and finally got aid from the safety boat.

Lap 3 saw Ian.B pull out still further in front with Mike crossing the line second just ahead of Veronica and Barney in 4^th. 5^th place was taken by Mark with Rowan 6^th and Ian.W 7^th ahead of son Matt. Alan was consistently 9^th throughout the race ahead of Gary with Peter 11^th. Nick failed to finish the race.

Debbie was the overall winner with two 1^st places with Ian.B having one first and one second place. Third overall was Mike with a 4^th and a second ahead of Veronica with two thirds.

Streaker Ramblings – Bough Beech – 29th March 2014

Due to a previous engagement, a trip to Rudyard Kipling’s house’ Batemans’ at Burwash and then to Bodiam Castle, we missed this Streaker Open Meeting but have taken the liberty to include the Report and Results provided by Sandra Hill – the BBSC Class Rep – via the SCOA. There was a great turnout with 15 Streakers on the start line, a warm sunny day and increasing easterly gusts to force 5, what more could you ask for?

Easterlies as Bough Beech are notoriously shifty making for a very tactical beat. With it gusting force 5 hard work up wind was rewarded with an especially high speed wet second reach and a tricky run.
There were 4 races, 3 to count, 2 in the morning back to back and 2 in the afternoon back to back, on a triangle sausage course.

Mike Hobin in 1814 achieved 1^st place in all four races making him the clear overall winner, well done! 2^nd place went to Ian Mansfield in 1723 and Mark Langston in 3^rd place in 1789.

Amanda Randall 1439 won 1^st lady, Rowan Curtis 1664 took 1^st youth prize and the traditional 4^th place burgee went to A Reindorp in 1819.

A mention must be made of Bough Beech Solo sailor Peter Edwards who jumped in to sail 1632, never having sailed a Streaker before. He finished with an admirable 9^th position overall to win the 1^st Bough Beech SC prize, despite several capsizes and was still smiling at the end of the day, well done!

Thank you to all the Streakers that travelled many miles to get here, the following are well worth a mention: Steve Garrett in 1084 travelled an amazing 314 miles (round trip) followed by Ian Bradley in 1817 260 miles and Mark Langston and Rowan Curtis each travelling 258 miles.

A great day was had by all, we hope to see you all again next year when maybe we can improve on the numbers still further.

Streaker Ramblings - Tamworth - 23rd MArch 2014

The first Streaker Open Meeting of 2014 and rather early in the year, not only that it is 172 miles away from Hove. That meant an early start, up at 5.30 and away at 6.30am. With just the one comfort stop on the way we arrived (dead on ETA) at 9.30. No room , to speak of, in the car Park – the club juniors were out in force for a training session and had come with Mums and Dads – but we found a tiny space and started to prepare the boat. We have to take issue with Matt Whitfield (as will be obvious later) as we reckoned that it was blowing at the top end of force 4 with gusts well above that at times.

So Alan Simmons (Lancing) took to the water for Race 1, did not have a very good start and found the gusty/shifty winds far from his liking as slowly but surely all the competitors behind him at the start passed by, leaving only Gary Hogan (Emberton) behind at the finish. Gary had suffered a failure to his mainsheet (central) horse and was towed back in. Alan in attempting to get ashore, capsized, right by the clubhouse and slipway. After Lunch he went afloat for Race 2 and whilst sailing back and forth in the starting area. A huge gust took him, along with some five other boats, for a swim once more.

His mast became embedded in the pond bottom and he was finally, with the help of one of the safety boats, able to free his mast and get back aboard after about ten minutes trying. One of the Lasers (this was a joint meeting) ended up in the trees on the east side of the lake with its helm taken ashore.

As a result, Alan next packed up his boat and did not stay for the final race. The report below is authored by Matt Whitfield (reproduced with his blessing) and was first posted on Y & Y on 28th March.
 

 

Sixteen Streaker sailors arrived on a sunny morning at Tamworth SC, greeted by a South-westerly force 3 and the prospect of a good day of competition ahead. With the event counting for both the Sail Register Northern Paddle and P&B Southern Paddle there was plenty to play for.

The first race got underway at 11 am in the typically shifty TSC breeze, with the Streakers following behind a 20 plus strong Laser fleet. Class stalwart Alan Gillard, lead from the front, reaching the windward first.



Despite the best attempts of a number of other helms, most noticeably Alan Bennett in his first open meeting, this is how it stayed. Second place was much more hotly contested between Bennett, Scott Bonner, also at his first open, Mike Hobin, Debbie Degge and local helm John Burgoine. Bennett eventually followed Gillard home in 2nd, with Hobin 3rd, Burgoine 4th, Degge 5th and Bonner 6th.

Just before race two got underway, the fleet found themselves dealing with a challenging squall bringing with it stronger winds and rain. A number of helms fell foul before the start, one of whom was 2nd placed Bennett. When the dust settled, Gillard once again took advantage from the off, winning the race to the first mark, this time followed round by Bonner and James Dawes. Local knowledge paid off for Ian Whitfield who, having chosen to take the gap between the islands, rounded in 4th. Gillard, again held out to win the race with Paul Burgoine and Bonner eventually settling in to 2nd and 3rd respectively with Hobin in 4th. Behind them, Matt Whitfield, trying to make amends for a poor first race, Dawes and Degge fought it out for 5th, with Whitfield eventually bringing it home, followed by Dawes in 6th and Degge in 7th.
Race 3 got underway in much the same conditions, albeit with a slightly reduced field, those having fallen foul of the squall in the previous race and Gillard choosing to sit it out having done enough to take the meeting. At the start, local helms M Whitfield and I Whitfield stuck to the committee boat end of the line in order to take the gap between the islands on the way down the beat. They were closely followed by the visiting John Aldhouse who had cottoned on to the advantage to be gained. Dawes, having gone around the outside narrowly made it to the first mark in the lead, closely followed by M Whitfield, Bonner, Aldhouse, I Whitfield and P Burgoine. For the remainder of the race, the lead was closely contested between Dawes, Alhouse and M Whitfield, with P Burgoine alos getting involved. In the end, despite managing to be in the lead at the end of every lap, a Mistake by M Whitfield going into the final lap gave the win to Dawes, with a resurgent Hobin just taking second from Aldhouse on the line. This left M Whitfield in 4th, P Burgoine in 5th and Bonner in 6th.

Once all was said and done, Alan Gillard won the meeting with two bullets, home by Mike Hobin in 2nd and James Dawes in 3rd. A good day was had by all and TSC would like to extend a thank you to all visitors and members who made the event possible. The next meeting for Streaker sailors is Bough Beech on the 29th of March.
